NEW REFEREES
For new referees, there are a few requirements that AYSO national and/or our region requires before you can first step foot on the field as a referee this Fall.
- Registration: All AYSO referees must be registered as volunteers. For instructions how to register as a volunteer, please visist: How to create an account and register
- Safety Training: There are several, short, online courses that all referees must complete in order to be certified. All of the courses can be found at AYSO U. There is also a link for AYSO U in the banner above. Once logged in to AYSO U, click on “Online Courses” at the top.
- Safe Haven: All referees are required to be current on their AYSO Safe Haven and CDC Concussion Awareness certifications. If you have volunteered for AYSO in other roles previously, you have probably completed these courses in the past. If you last took the course since 8/1/20 your certification is current. If you have completed these courses prior to 8/1/20 and/or have not taken the courses before, please log-in to AYSOU (www.AYSOU.org) and complete the courses. The courses are brief, online only courses.
- Sudden Cardiac Arrest: All referees are required to complete the Sudden Cardiac Arrest training. This is a one-time training. If you have already completed this training, you are not required to take the course again. If you have not yet completed this training, please log-in to AYSOU (www.AYSOU.org) and complete the course. (This is a brief course and can be vitally important at any level of the game as evidenced by the recent scare with a Danish player having a heart attack during a recent Euro match!). This course is also listed under the “Safe Haven Courses” on AYSOU.
- Referee Training: There are a couple of different options for completing this training.
- Online Module: The first part is online and then you also need to attend a brief in-person training to complete your certification. The online portion can be found at AYSOU.org under “Refereeing Courses.” You will then want to complete the “Regional Referee - Online + In-Person Companion Course (2 Part Bundle)” There are several “Chapters” to the training, but they are all brief. You also do not need to complete them all during one sitting.
- Online – Part 2 (In-Person): Once you have completed the online Referee training, you can sign-up for the “Regional Referee Online Companion Course.” The schedule for these can be found under “In-Person Courses” on AYSOU. Please make sure you are signing up for the “Regional Referee Companion Online Course” and not the “Regional Referee Course” which is entirely in-person (discussed below). Also, please make sure you are signing up for the right location. AYSOU schedules courses across the country. Our region’s classes are not yet on the site, but should be soon and will take place in August. Currently scheduled classes can be found in the important dates above.
OR
- In-Person Only: There is also the option to complete your training entirely in-person. Our region normally does not offer any in-person only courses, but some of our surrounding regions do and you are welcome to attend one of these entirely in-person training sessions instead. You can find the schedule and sign-up on AYSOU under “In Person Courses” and find the schedule for “Regional Referee Course.”
- CGI: Our region uses a website called CGI Sports for our referee scheduling during the season. You can sign-up for access at www.cgisports.com/ref/5191 and click on the “Please register as a referee now” link in the middle of the page.
Note: you will not be able to register for any games until you complete the training and requirements listed above.
If you have any questions or problems registering in CGI, please contact Referee Schedule Coordinator, at [email protected].

We look forward to seeing everyone on the fields this Fall and thank you again for volunteering!
